State of Play Returns September 3 — Plus a State of Play Japan Aftershow

Sony has locked in its next showcase for Thursday, September 3, 2026, closing with an extended look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation and rolling straight into a separate State of Play Japan episode. Here are the times and everything that could realistically show up.

Sony has confirmed a new State of Play for Thursday, September 3, 2026 — two broadcasts airing back-to-back. The first is the main show, built around updates and announcements from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners. It closes with what Sony calls an "extended look at the vast world of Final Fantasy VII Revelation" from Square Enix. Immediately after, a new episode of State of Play Japan takes over, hosted again by Yuki Kaji, with deep dives on games from studios across Japan and Asia.

The timing matters: it lands days before Marvel's Wolverine, which makes this Sony's pivot point from 2026 into its 2027 slate.

Start times

  • 6:00 AM PT — Thursday, September 3
  • 9:00 AM ET — Thursday, September 3
  • 2:00 PM BST — Thursday, September 3
  • 3:00 PM CEST — Thursday, September 3
  • 10:00 PM JST / KST — Thursday, September 3
  • 11:00 PM AET — Thursday, September 3 (1:00 AM NZST, September 4)

It streams on the official PlayStation YouTube and Twitch channels. The Japan aftershow follows with no break, so don't close the tab when the first show wraps.

Confirmed: Final Fantasy VII Revelation

The only guaranteed headliner. Sony's wording — "extended look" — suggests a substantial gameplay segment rather than a teaser, likely the closing block of the main show. Expect a look at how the trilogy's final chapter handles the world map, party systems and the plot threads Rebirth deliberately left dangling.

The biggest rumour: Naughty Dog's Intergalactic

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet has been silent since its reveal, and the consensus among reporters is that this is the show where it finally gets a real gameplay demonstration. If Sony wants a moment, this is the cheapest one available to them.

What else could realistically appear

  • Marvel's Wolverine — it launches within weeks of the show, so the useful slot here is a final pre-launch or launch trailer, an accolades-style spot, or a preload/roadmap beat. Insomniac already delivered its big gameplay and story blowout at the June 2, 2026 State of Play, so there is nothing left to reveal — only to sell.
  • God of War: Laufey — Santa Monica has already shown this twice: the reveal and full gameplay debut at State of Play June 2026, where Faye woke in the Everywhen after her pyre and picked up Rue and Frank. With a 16 February 2027 date locked, the realistic beat now is a story or cinematic trailer plus pre-orders and editions going live, not another systems deep-dive.
  • Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis — the extended gameplay demo already ran at Gamescom 2026 (the Peru chapter, the remade cog puzzle and the Tomb of Qualopec approach). If it appears, expect a shorter cut-down of that demo aimed at a console audience, or a release window — not a first look.
  • Until Dawn 2 — the genuinely under-exposed Sony-adjacent title. Supermassive has ground to cover on cast, structure and platform detail, which makes it one of the few slots where a real reveal is still on the table.
  • Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding-adjacent post-launch content — the usual Sony pattern of slotting live-service and update beats between reveals.
  • Third-party sizzle: Square Enix beyond FF7, Capcom, Bandai Namco and Kojima Productions are recurring State of Play regulars.
  • State of Play Japan: Team Asobi, Atlus, Falcom and smaller Asian studios — this is where the surprise indies usually land.

What almost certainly won't show up

  • GTA 6 — Rockstar does its own thing, and it just held a full 26-minute Netflix showcase.
  • Hardware. State of Play is mostly a software show; Sony saves silicon for its own separate beats (though controllers and accessories do sneak in — see September 2024 and 2025).
  • Anything tied to a 2029+ window — Sony has trended toward showing games closer to release.

Timeline: the last five September State of Plays

September is Sony's most reliable showcase month, though it has skipped it twice (there was no September edition in 2020 or 2021 — the 2021 September beat was a full PlayStation Showcase instead). Here is what the last five September episodes actually delivered.

  • September 24, 2025 — Marvel's Wolverine's first gameplay trailer and a Fall 2026 window; Nioh 3 dated February 6, 2026; Code Vein II dated January 30, 2026; Crimson Desert dated March 19; Deus Ex Remastered dated February 5; Halloween revealed for September 8, 2026; Gran Turismo 7's Spec III update and the 100-million-sales milestone; a God of War 20th Anniversary DualSense; The Last of Us Part II hitting the PS Plus catalogue.
  • September 24, 2024 — the show that set up the current era: Ghost of Yotei revealed with Atsu as the new Ghost; Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered dated October 31; LEGO Horizon Adventures dated November 14; free Astro Bot DLC with speedrun levels and new VIP bots; PS5 Pro follow-up detail after its separate reveal.
  • September 14, 2023 — a third-party heavy episode: Helldivers 2 dated February 8, 2024; a major Marvel's Spider-Man 2 gameplay showcase of the expanded New York weeks before launch; a Final Fantasy VII Rebirth deep-dive; Resident Evil 4's Separate Ways DLC plus a free VR mode; Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora; Ghostrunner 2; Baby Steps; Roblox coming to PlayStation.
  • September 13, 2022 — arguably the strongest cold open of the run: Tekken 8's reveal at the top and a God of War Ragnarok story trailer at the close, with Rise of the Ronin revealed by Team Ninja, a Stellar Blade (then Project Eve) story trailer, Like a Dragon: Ishin dated February 2023, Synduality, Pacific Drive and a Hogwarts Legacy PlayStation-exclusive quest.
  • September 24, 2019 — the oldest September episode and still the template: The Last of Us Part II dated February 21, 2020, a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare campaign deep-dive, Humanity's reveal, MediEvil's demo, Wattam dated for December, a Death Stranding limited-edition PS4 Pro bundle and a PSVR sizzle reel.

The pattern is consistent: one platform-holder anchor (Wolverine, Ghost of Yotei, Ragnarok, The Last of Us Part II), a run of third-party dates in the 4-6 month window, one genuine surprise reveal, and hardware or PS Plus housekeeping. Read the September 3 lineup against that shape and Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the anchor — the dates handed out before it are the real news.

September State of Plays have historically been the strongest of the year — the show where Sony sets its next twelve months. Treat the Final Fantasy segment as the anchor and everything before it as the actual news.

We'll update Countdown HQ's countdowns the moment dates land. If Intergalactic gets a firm window or God of War: Laufey's pre-orders go live, they'll be on the board within the hour.
