The rebootReleased

Assassin's Creed Origins

After a year off, Ubisoft Montreal rebuilt Assassin's Creed as an open-world RPG set in Ptolemaic Egypt. You play Bayek of Siwa, a Medjay whose personal tragedy becomes the founding of the Hidden Ones. Hitbox-based combat, loot tiers, levelling and the Eagle Vision replacement Senu all arrived here and defined the next decade of the series.

  • Free Discovery Tour mode turned the map into a history lesson
The RPG peakReleased

Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Ubisoft Quebec pushed the RPG turn all the way: pick Kassandra or Alexios, make dialogue choices, romance characters and reach multiple endings. Set during the Peloponnesian War, Odyssey layered naval combat, mercenary bounty hunters and a mythological Atlantis storyline over the biggest map the series had built at that point.

The Viking eraReleased

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Eivor leads a Norse clan out of Norway to carve out a home in 9th-century England. Valhalla swapped Odyssey's gear grind for a settlement you build up, raids on riverside monasteries, and a region-by-region alliance structure. It became the best-selling entry in franchise history and was supported for years with expansions ending in Dawn of Ragnarök.

The throwbackReleased

Assassin's Creed Mirage

Mirage deliberately shrank the series back down. Basim Ibn Ishaq, first met in Valhalla, is a street thief in 9th-century Baghdad who joins the Hidden Ones. It is a compact, city-focused stealth game — no sprawling RPG tree, no levelled loot, just social stealth, hidden blade assassinations, notoriety and parkour, deliberately echoing the first games.

A deliberate return to the classic formula

Platforms

Key points

The Japan entryReleased

Assassin's Creed Shadows

The setting fans had asked for since the beginning. Shadows splits play between Naoe, a shinobi from Iga built around stealth and grappling, and Yasuke, the historical African samurai who serves Oda Nobunaga and fights head-on. Feudal Japan's seasons change the world dynamically, light and shadow drive the stealth system, and each character opens completely different routes through the same objective.

Assassin's Creed Hexe

First teased as Codename Hexe during Ubisoft Forward in September 2022 as part of the Assassin's Creed Infinity plan, Hexe is Ubisoft Montreal's next mainline entry — widely reported to be set in the Holy Roman Empire during the 16th-century witch trials, with a much darker, smaller and more focused design than the RPG entries. Ubisoft reaffirmed it was in development in March 2026, but it still has no announced release date. Leaks through mid-2026 pointed at a June 2027 target, with other sources saying the second half of 2027 at the earliest and warning it could slip again.
