The Last of Us

Joel and Ellie's full run in order — the 2013 original and Left Behind, the remaster, Part II, the ground-up Part I remake and Part II Remastered — plus the two things the fanbase is still waiting on.

Nothing new announced

Naughty Dog's next game is Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, not a Last of Us. Part III has never been announced and the standalone multiplayer game was shelved — everything below the line is hope, not news.

The beginningReleased

The Last of Us

Naughty Dog followed Uncharted with something far bleaker: a fungal pandemic has collapsed the United States, and hardened smuggler Joel is hired to move a fourteen-year-old girl named Ellie out of a Boston quarantine zone. What starts as a job becomes a year-long journey across a ruined country and one of the most discussed endings in the medium. Scarce ammo, brutal encounter design and Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson's performances turned it into an instant landmark.

Key points

  • Introduced Joel and Ellie, and the cordyceps outbreak setting
  • Tense stealth-survival combat with crafting and scarce resources
  • Won over 200 Game of the Year awards
  • Its final ten minutes are still argued about more than a decade on
The expansionReleased

The Last of Us: Left Behind

A three-hour prequel chapter that cuts between Ellie caring for a wounded Joel and a flashback to a night in an abandoned mall with her best friend Riley. It is quieter than the main game, mostly about two teenagers messing around in a dead world, and it does more for Ellie's character than most full-length campaigns manage. Later bundled into every re-release.

The Last of Us Remastered

A quick PS4 turnaround barely a year after launch: higher-resolution textures, 1080p output, an unlocked 60fps mode, improved shadows and the full Left Behind chapter included. It also carried over the Factions multiplayer mode and added commentary tracks, and for years it was the definitive way to play until the ground-up remake arrived.

The Last of Us Part II

Five years after Salt Lake City, Ellie leaves Jackson on a path of revenge to Seattle — and halfway through, the game hands you the controller from the other side of the conflict. Part II is Naughty Dog's most technically accomplished and most divisive game: extraordinary animation, dread-heavy encounter design, a huge accessibility suite, and a structure deliberately built to make you uncomfortable with what you're doing.

The remakeReleased

The Last of Us Part I

Not a remaster — a full rebuild of the 2013 game in the Part II engine, with new character models, rewritten AI, redone animation and lighting, DualSense haptics and Part II's accessibility suite bolted on. It arrived alongside HBO's adaptation and drew criticism for its price and a rough PC launch, but it is now the definitive version of Joel and Ellie's first journey.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered

The PS5 version adds native 4K, a 60fps fidelity mode and DualSense support, but the real additions are No Return — a roguelike survival mode with unlockable characters, the closest thing to Factions the series has now — plus three playable Lost Levels cut from development with director commentary, and a guitar free-play mode. It came to PC in April 2025 and remains the most recent Last of Us release.

The Last of Us Part III

There is no announced Part III. Neil Druckmann has repeatedly said he has a concept he believes is worth telling — he described writing down an outline he found as compelling as the first two — but has been just as clear that Naughty Dog will not make it unless the idea earns it, and that Part II's ending works as a full stop if nothing follows. With Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet occupying the studio, any Part III is years away at best, and the studio has never committed to one.

No announcement · Druckmann has only ever described it as an idea

What fans want

  • Some resolution for where Part II leaves Ellie
  • Druckmann has said a story concept exists but nothing is greenlit
  • Naughty Dog is currently focused on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet
  • No studio commitment, no platform, no date

The Factions Standalone

Naughty Dog spent years building a standalone Last of Us multiplayer game — teased as its most ambitious project ever, with concept art shown in 2022 — before announcing at the end of 2023 that continuing it would have meant becoming a live-service studio at the cost of single-player games, and shelving it. Factions from the first game has been offline-adjacent ever since Part I dropped it, and a proper return is the community's loudest ongoing request.

Cancelled by Naughty Dog · no revival announced

What fans want

  • The scrapped standalone revived, or Factions folded into a future game
  • Officially shelved in December 2023 to protect single-player output
  • No Factions mode in Part I; No Return is the only replacement
  • Nothing in development, nothing announced
