State of Play September 2026: Everything Announced Across Both Shows
Final Fantasy VII Revelation is dated April 8, 2027 and going multiplatform. Until Dawn 2 lands January 28. Konami showed two new games, Ghost of Yotei got a roguelike, and Naughty Dog never showed up. Every announcement from Sony's double-header.
Sony ran two shows back to back on September 3, 2026 — a main State of Play followed immediately by State of Play Japan — covering more than 30 games in total. The main broadcast ran roughly 45 minutes; with the Japan episode attached, the full VOD is close to two hours. It was a date-heavy show rather than a reveal-heavy one, and the reaction online has been split down the middle.
The two headline dates
- Final Fantasy VII Revelation — April 8, 2027. The closing deep-dive, and the biggest news of the night is not the date but the platforms: the trilogy's final chapter launches simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. No PlayStation exclusivity window.
- Until Dawn 2: Choice and Consequences — January 28, 2027. A full reveal rather than a tease: you guide the cast of fake ghost-hunting YouTube channel Dead True (plus a chicken) across Akishima Island, with the returning butterfly-effect structure deciding who survives.
- Metro 2039 — February 4, 2027, with a lengthy quest-length gameplay trailer following its short Gamescom glimpse.
- Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown — October 15, 2026. A large paid expansion from Pearl Abyss, shown captured on PS5 Pro.
- Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition — October 1, 2026, bundling the Echoes of Sekigahara story expansion and the Most Wanted survival mode.
Marvel's Wolverine: a sell, not a reveal
Exactly as expected, Insomniac's slot was a marketing beat rather than new information. A movie-style story trailer, twelve days out from the September 15 launch, leaning on the Sentinel hunt and the X-Men threads the game is braiding together. Nothing mechanical we hadn't already seen at the June show.
Ghost of Yotei gets its roguelike
Sucker Punch is adding Most Wanted, a single-player survival mode where Atsu chains hunts together, banking perks between runs — structurally very close to Naughty Dog's No Return from The Last of Us Part II Remastered. Nagato, Oyuki and, notably, Jin from Ghost of Tsushima are all playable. It arrives October 1 alongside the Complete Edition and the Echoes of Sekigahara narrative expansion, which got its own trailer during the Japan half.
Konami came to play
Two new titles from Konami, the standout being Rhapsody in Scarlet — a stylish, jazz-scored action game and the closest thing the show had to a genuine surprise. There was no Devil May Cry 6 from Capcom, which had been the persistent pre-show rumour.
The rest of the main show
- Resident Evil — the show opened with a film trailer, not a game: Zach Cregger's Resident Evil, in theatres September 18, following medical courier Bryan into Raccoon City at the peak of the RE2 outbreak.
- Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance — the expansion's first proper trailer, set in a civilisation above the clouds with new mounts and shifting ecosystems. 2027, no month.
- Maneater 2 — surfaced from nowhere. Still a shark simulator, now with more land.
- CONQ: Crown of No Quarter — reveal trailer for a large-scale open-world warfare game with faction armies, sieges and naval combat.
- Updates for Gran Turismo 7 and Saros.
- Hardware and merch: GTA 6-themed DualSense controllers, plus an official LEGO set of the original PlayStation.
State of Play Japan
- Daba: Land of Water Scar — a China Hero Project soulslike where you play a clayman crossing a world whose waters have dried up. PS5, Spring 2027.
- Digimon Story Time Stranger: A Hero's Eternal Legacy — expansion DLC set three years after the base game, with a new protagonist, partner and roughly 50 new Digimon. PS5, 2027.
- Dragon Ball, plus a run of smaller Japanese and Asian studio titles, closing on a sizzle reel.
- An extended interview segment with Atsu's Japanese voice actor ahead of the Ghost of Yotei expansion trailer.
What didn't happen
The pre-show consensus was that Naughty Dog would finally give Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet a real gameplay demonstration, with an outside chance of a The Last of Us Part III tease. Neither appeared. Nothing at all from Naughty Dog. That absence is the main reason a loud slice of the audience is calling this the weakest State of Play of the generation, even though the show handed out four hard release dates.
Read it against the September pattern and it holds: one platform-holder anchor, a run of dates in the four-to-six month window, one surprise (Rhapsody in Scarlet), and hardware housekeeping. What broke the pattern was Final Fantasy VII Revelation going multiplatform day one.
Countdown HQ's board is already updated — Final Fantasy VII Revelation now counts down to April 8, 2027 and Until Dawn 2 to January 28, 2027.
