GTA 6: An Extended Look — Everything Rockstar Finally Showed Us
26 minutes, no commentary, captured on PS5. Rockstar's Netflix premiere delivered the first real GTA 6 gameplay: Jason and Lucia's switchable partnership, a map three times the size of Red Dead 2, and an 80-hour playthrough. Here's the full breakdown.
After 18 months of silence and a brutal week of leaks, Rockstar finally showed Grand Theft Auto VI on its own terms. 'Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look' premiered on Netflix on August 27, 2026, ran 26 minutes with no commentary or captions, and landed on YouTube six hours later. Rockstar also pushed out a 14.2GB 4K download of the video for anyone who wanted to freeze-frame it properly. The footage was captured on PS5, confirmed in the end card.
It was a montage rather than a walkthrough — tight cutscene work spliced with mission fragments — but paired with press previews from IGN and The New York Times, it is by far the clearest picture we have of the November 19 release.
Jason and Lucia: a partnership you can dial up or down
The reveal spent most of its runtime on Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, the Bonnie-and-Clyde pair at the centre of the story. You can switch between them at any time. You can have one tag along while you roam, or head out solo as either. In one sequence Jason hangs out of the passenger window shooting at police while Lucia drives; later the roles flip and Lucia takes the wheel while Jason and a third character return fire.
Crucially, the relationship is not fixed. Rockstar told IGN the bond develops based on player actions and can be opted out of entirely — they do not have to end up a romantic couple. There is even a dedicated mechanic for holding hands, which tells you how granular the character work has gone.
The split-mission structure
One of the longest segments showed the two protagonists separated inside the same job. Enemies breach an upper floor where Jason is working security, and he fights them from cover. Lucia, a floor below, moves on foot trying to avoid detection — and when an enemy pins her to the ground, on-screen button prompts appear to break the grapple. Elsewhere, during an apartment-block drug bust, Jason lowers Lucia out of a window to escape.
Scale: three times Red Dead 2
- Rockstar told The New York Times the Leonida map is three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's playable map.
- Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said a February playthrough took 80 hours, covering the main story plus some optional content.
- Leonida spans Vice City plus swamp, keys, farmland and highway country — all of it shown off in the montage.
- Interiors are a real focus: apartments, rooftop bars and underground clubs were all shown densely furnished.
Activities and systems glimpsed
Between cutscenes, the video flashed through a weapon wheel menu, boat driving, underwater diving, basketball, track racing and parachuting — plus Snapmatic-style social features. It stops short of explaining any of them, but it confirms the breadth of side content is enormous.
The graphics conversation
Praise was close to universal. Photorealistic faces, natural movement, and — a detail fans latched onto immediately — a genuine range of body shapes and sizes among background NPCs, something almost no other big game bothers with. IGN's Ryan McCaffrey said GTA 6 "might be the best-looking game I've ever seen."
The internet being the internet, one oddly stiff backflip animation became the day's main nitpick — the 2026 equivalent of the Spider-Man puddles discourse.
The elephant in the room: the leaks
The premiere followed a week of unauthorised gameplay leaks from the 'CyberLeek' account, which Rockstar said had been "heartbreaking" to see spread. The leaker's story ended less romantically than it started: they were also promoting a memecoin, which they rug-pulled on the day of the reveal, reportedly walking away with around $250,000.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said ahead of time that there was "reasoning" behind the Netflix debut and that we'd "understand more" after watching. Having watched, nobody does.
What we still do not know
- No PC release date, and no sign Rockstar plans to discuss one soon.
- Nothing at all on GTA Online's next era.
- No detail on progression, businesses, property or the economy.
- No explanation of how much the Jason/Lucia bond actually changes the story.
GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. That is now well inside Countdown HQ's countdown range — and after 26 minutes of this, the wait somehow feels longer.
